The company is preparing technical and financial proposals for Bangalore as well as looking at monorail systems for Patna and New Delhi

SCOMI Engineering Bhd, which won its first overseas job for a monorail system in Mumbai last week, is eyeing two more Indian cities for monorail projects worth RM4 billion over the next two years.Scomi Group Bhd's senior vice-president of group marketing, Kanesan Velupillai, said the company is looking at Bangalore in the state of Karnataka and Patna in Bihar. It is also believed to be looking at a monorail system for New Delhi."We are working concurrently in preparing technical and financial proposals for Bangalore.

"The technical proposal is expected to be submitted to the Bangalore Metro Rail Corp (which oversees the implementation of metros and monorails in Karnataka) by next week, while the financial proposal should be sent by the end of November," Kanesan told Business
Times.

According to Kanesan, Scomi was invited to work with Indian Railway Construction Co (Ircon) on a feasibility study for the implementation of a monorail system in Patna following the working visit of India's Railways Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav to Kuala Lumpur in May this year."The feasibility report should be ready by the middle of next year," Kanesan said.

Apart from the Indian subcontinent, Scomi has also set its sights on Nigeria.Kanesan said the company has sent an advance team to Nigeria to work on an accelerated implementation and execution plan for a monorail system in Lagos."The plan is to be completed and submitted by the end of November," he said.

Scomi's new-generation monorail, employing the Scomi Urban Transit Rail Applications technology, will be featured in all the overseas monorail projects. Each car can carry 142 passengers, and each train will have four to six cars.On the feasibility study Scomi is undertaking for a monorail system in Hanoi, Vietnam, Kanesan expects it to be completed by the end of next month. "The next phase for Vietnam will be to carry out a detailed project report for implementation," he said.

Scomi consortium believed to have won India rail job

NEW DELHI: A consortium comprising Scomi Engineering Bhd and co-partner Larsen & Toubro Ltd (L&T) is believed to be the successful bidder for the first monorail project in Mumbai costing RM1.01bil.

The other bidder was Reliance Infrastructure, which had partnered Japan’s Hitachi, to build the 20km elevated monorail in India’s financial capital.

The Times of India reported Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) commissioner Ratnakar Gaikwad as saying the main deciding factor was the timeframe to complete the project.

“The bid submitted by L&T and Scomi was more sound and promising than the one submitted by Anil’s Reliance Infrastructure and Hitachi of Japan,” Gaikwad said.
He said L&T and Scomi promised to complete the project within 24 months while Reliance Infrastructure, headed by Indian business tycoon Anil Ambani, needed more than 50 months for the first phase of the project.
People familiar with the project told Bernama in Mumbai that Scomi and L&T were fine-tuning the pricing details and the final announcement could come soon.
Seven companies had initially submitted bids for the project, which would be implemented on a built, operate and transfer basis and expected to come onstream within two years. MMRDA shortlisted the bidders to two,
The metro lines will complement the present railways and help ease traffic in the city, where nearly 11 million people use public transport daily. — Bernama

SCOMI Engineering Bhd, a unit of Scomi Group Bhd, is upbeat about securing a monorail contract in Mumbai, India, but hopes to secure the monorail project in Penang first. Its president, Hilmy Zaini, said the company wants to introduce its second generation monorail called Sutra, which was launched in November last year in Penang, before launching the new innovative system to other parts of the world."It would be good for us to launch the new Sutra at the company's hometown in Penang," he told reporters after Scomi Engineering's annual general meeting in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.Hilmy was asked to update the progress of the monorail project in Penang, which is currently facing uncertainty.

"There is nothing much to update. We are waiting for the results (whether to go on with the project or not). We don't know when (a decision will be made)."The Mumbai monorail project is closing the tender in a few weeks time. But we hope to get the Penang monorail first," he said.Scomi is part of a group that includes Malaysian Resources Corp Bhd (MRCB), which is bidding for the monorail project on Penang island. In January this year, Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd awarded a letter of intent for the project to MRCB, which formed a consortium with Penang Port Sdn Bhd and Scomi Engineering Bhd.However, the project has been put in doubt after the Pakatan Rakyat win in Penang during the last general elections on March 8.Apart from Mumbai and Penang, Hilmy said, the company is also looking to bid for monorail projects in the Middle East, Vietnam, Africa and several cities in India. He said the company has been engaged to conduct feasibility studies in Vietnam and Saudi Arabia."We hope to complete the study in Vietnam in three months times, while in Saudi Arabia it will take between six months and a year to complete. "When completed, we will present our findings to the respective authorities and submit our bids for the projects," he said.Hilmy said the company aims to set up two new machine shops in a year, starting from 2009.
